The Washington and Lee Athletics Hall of Fame, established in 1987 by the W&L Alumni Association, honors individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to Washington and Lee Athletics and have helped bring recognition, honor, excellence and distinction to the University and its intercollegiate athletic program.

W&L Trailblazer Award

In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of coeducation and women's athletics at W&L, the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee and Jan Hathorn, the Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics, have also introduced the W&L Trailblazer Award. This honor recognizes individuals who have opened doors for others and made enduring contributions to W&L Athletics and the wider community.

The inaugural W&L Athletics Trailblazer Award recipients are:

  • Alston Parker Watt ’89 – Represented the Generals by competing in women's golf, swimming & diving, and lacrosse, helping Washington and Lee meet NCAA sport sponsorship requirements. 

  • Martha Cornbrooks ’01 – Played a pivotal role in launching the field hockey program as its founding student member.

  • Courtney Edman ’93 – Served as the founding student of the women's basketball team, laying the groundwork for the program's establishment.

  • Barry Machado, Professor of History, Emeritus – A dedicated W&L faculty member and passionate advocate for women's athletics, Machado was instrumental in the development of the women's basketball program. He also served as the team's first head coach during its initial years as a club sport.

You’ve got questions, and we have answers! Here’s everything you need to know about Hall of Fame to make the most of your experience. 

Registration

    • Registration will open in May 2025

    • The deadline for online registration is September 21.

    • We kindly encourage pre-registration so we can plan for the best experience possible. Your name tag becomes your admission ticket for all events and is required to be served food and/or beverages.

    • We understand that cost can be a concern. If you're facing financial barriers, please reach out us at alumni@wlu.edu. We may have options available to ensure you can participate in Hall of Fame. Your presence is important to us, and we want to help make it possible for you to join the celebration.

    • Yes. We will refund your registration in full up until Friday, September 12. After that date, unfortunately we are unable to offer a refund. Email alumni@wlu.edu if you need a refund.

Lodging

    • A small block of rooms is available at The Wingate and must be reserved by August 26. Contact the hotel directly to book, 540-464-8100, code #HOFWLU25.

    • Booking sites such as Expedia and Travelocity also provide real-time availability, or you can explore local options here.

Parking and Check-In

    • Parking is available in the W&L parking garage located adjacent to the Duchossois Athletic ​and Recreation Center, or along the street near Evans Hall. Here is a link to the campus map ​for all options.

    • A check-in table will be located in the lobby of Evans Hall.

Attire

    • Dress for the Lettie Pate Evans Society (by invitation) is semi-formal. For men, this often includes ​dress slacks or chinos paired with a dress shirt and optional tie, or a tailored blazer with ​trousers. Women may opt for dressy separates like a blouse with a skirt or pants, or a ​dress/jumpsuit. Attire for Saturday’s keynote, lunch and athletic events is casual.

    • Dress for the evening reception, dinner and induction ceremony is also semi-formal. We encourage dressing in ​layers and packing a jacket. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Weather

We know better than to predict a forecast – things change very quickly here in the ​Shenandoah Valley, especially in the fall! Check the weather before you leave.

Food and Beverage 

    • We’re pleased to provide a variety of dining options during Hall of Fame Weekend, whether catered meals or in our dining facilities. The W&L Culinary Team takes great care to provide healthy, balanced eating options for our event weekends. We are committed to helping guests with their dietary needs. Each menu signage lists common allergens and traits so you can find the best options for you; whether you have food allergies, health conditions, religious restrictions, or simply need guidance or assistance with your food selections. We do our best to menu in a way that can fit most diets and common restrictions. We take every precaution to check ingredient information and to ensure that cross-contamination of ingredients does not occur. It is important to note, we do not have allergen-free facilities or serving lines.

    • Our goal is to make Hall of Fame Weekend accessible to all attendees and ensure that everyone feels welcome and comfortable. Alumni requiring assistance should contact alumni@wlu.edu to make prior arrangements.
